So this was the first book I had ever read by Monica McCarty and it was definitely
worth picking up!
I really enjoyed this book and even though it was the last book in a series (Book 12,
I think) I didn't feel lost. McCarty did a great job of keeping new readers informed
on what had happened previously without bogging down the story.
Because this is the last book in this series, however I now have a backlist to find!!
Very excited about that.
I enjoyed the relationship between Alex and Joan throughout the novel, their snipping
at each other was funny and served to keep the mood light in what is essentially a
war time novel. I also thought the author did a good job explaining the motivations
behind the main character's actions. It is not easy to make a traitor likable, but
she managed it.
I did find Alex's return to the Guard a bit abrupt. I felt as though the author was
building up to a big scene and it sort of fell flat for me. She also skimmed over
the ramifications of Alex's betrayal of the English crown, for example: did he loose
his lands in England over this?? But that is my one complaint for the entire novel
so it's a keeper in my estimation!!
